When in Singapore - either for a brief stopover or a longer holiday - consider staying at least one night at the opulent Raffles Hotel.
Everything about this historic grand hotel oozes quality and charm, and at times it's more than a little over-the-top for your average Kiwi.
Service starts at the door where you are greeted by an individual escort who will show you to your room.
And the rooms are something else. Far from your average hotel suite, these rooms are sumptuously decorated, have 4m-high ceilings, and are sprinkled with antique furniture and Oriental carpets as well as all the services you could wish for.
House chocolates and a free book about the hotel await you in the room, as well.
Raffles Hotel was opened in 1887 and was named after Singapore's founder, Sir Stamford Raffles.
In 1987 the Government designated the hotel a national monument and in March 1989 it closed for more than two years for a Singapore $160 million ($139 million) renovation that took it back to its glory from the "benchmark" year of 1915.
Alterations carried out since that time had not been in sympathy with the original hotel. For example, ceilings had been lowered with the introduction of air-conditioning.
There are more than 40 shops in the adjoining Raffles Hotel Arcade, and the complex is home to 18 bars and restaurants. There is also a hotel pool, spa, museum and a large theatre where plays are performed.
British dramatist and novelist Somerset Maugham once called Raffles the legendary symbol for "all the fables of the Exotic East".
It's more like a museum. Mod-cons such as Bose in-room stereo systems are hidden behind the scenes. All this luxury comes at a cost, though. It'll hit the bank balance - the cheapest room is Singapore $650 ($563) a night - but treating yourself to at least one night there will be a night you won't easily forget.
