With all the political comings and goings of recent weeks, it's easy to think there's nothing in the capital beyond the Beehive.
So it's particularly nice to know that Wellington has now welcomed back a member of another select set, without the need for protracted political negotiations. The recent re-opening of the Sofitel Hotel on Bolton Street sees a return of elegance beyond compare, in every sense.
Behold the beauty now the wraps are off, says the Sofitel Wellington's General Manager. "It's not just a fabulous place to stay, it's a fantastic place to eat, drink and socialise, in refined surrounds." Consider the rooms and suites: an exuberant mix of vintage gold and bronze hues, complemented by a myriad of luxurious textures.
It's a plum position, as any guest will attest. Sofitel Wellington - originally the Apple and Pear Board building - sits on the CBD doorstep and is but a hop, skip and easy stroll to many of the capital's key attractions.
Enhanced by its proximity to the Botanic Gardens, the hotel has embraced a botanic theme, with rich floral patterns incorporated in the decor. Many guest rooms and suites offer views to the gardens and Karori hills. Architecture and furniture feature natural timber, brass, copper, velvet and leather - a recognition of the capital's rich colonial heritage.
"It's a very welcoming environment," says the General Manager. "We believe we have a great attention to detail when it comes to luxury - in every area of guest experience."
That extends to the restaurant and bar area. The Sofitel Wellington's plush and elegant Jardin Grill strikes a fine balance between an intimate ambience and a rich, bold design statement. Star attraction is the wood-fired grill and fire pit. Special features include Sunday brunch and bubbles, starting next month.
Diners can be assured they're in the best of hands. Local favourite and multi award-winning chef Roy Giam has assumed the role of head chef, bringing with him his legendary and cutting-edge food styles and finest epicurean creations. Roy's food philosophy: fresh produce, quality ingredients, an ingrained passion for food and honesty will be brought to the fore in these rejuvenated surrounds.
Fancy a cocktail? Make for the Green Room - "a splendid space" says the General Manager. It's here you'll find a chic and stylish haven that hovers above the hustle and bustle of the inner-city buzz.
The Green Room's features includes a gin and tonic collection - inspired partly by the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris - together with a wine list endorsed by wine writer John Saker. Says the General Manager: "it's a cosy place to relax and trial some interesting cocktails as well."
As with the Jardin Grill, the Green Room is open to both guests and members of the public alike.
With the doors open once more, the Sofitel's focus is on welcoming guests, says the General Manager. "We're very happy to be re-connecting with both Wellington locals and visitors from near and far. Our highly trained team members are very excited to be able to provide elegant service to all our guests.."
