The small Northland town of Waipu is well known for its Scottish connections, especially its annual Highland Games.
The Waipu Heritage Centre tells the story of the great migration, between 1851 and 1860, which resulted in the establishment of a 900-strong Scottish community at Waipu. The names of the original settlers and their descendants are on record in the centre, providing a valuable link to the past.
