The tiny settlement of Tikao on the western side of Akaroa Harbour has almost 40 houses - mostly baches - but just nine are lived in year round.
Tourists can enjoy the tranquillity and birdsong of the area by booking in at Ian and Ally Telfer's bed and breakfast. The couple's home is a one-minute walk from a 10m-high waterfall, and the stream runs right past their house. The beach is two minutes away; there you can fish and swim safely, and try out one of Ian's restored character boats.
Nearby eating-out spots include French Farm Vineyard, the Duvauchelles pub and the Barry's Bay Cheese Factory. Akaroa is a 20-minute drive away.
The tariff is $40 a person, including continental breakfast, or $55 for a single person in a double room. Children stay for half price, free if under 5.
