Penguins on parade in Oamaru

Oamaru is one of the easiest places to watch blue penguins return from a day at sea and see them up close.

The colony is five minutes' drive from town in the former Oamaru harbour quarry.

Since the quarry was turned over to the penguins in 1992, the habitat has been restored and nesting boxes installed.

The best viewing time is after sunset, and lighting allows visitors to watch the penguins from a viewing stand without disrupting their habits.

The Oamaru blue penguin colony is on Breakwater Rd, signposted from SH1.
