Picnics are perfect for families or couples. Make the meal memorable by shaking the rug out at the sheltered, grassy spot at the far north end of the road to north Piha.
An alternative is the end of Glen Esk Rd, where you can cross a stream to a grass picnic spot, and an electric barbecue is nearby. Another ideal spot is a walk away along Byer's Track.
Finish with a stroll on Piha Beach - but perhaps choose to climb just the lower levels of Lion's Rock. Being scaled by around 1000 people every weekend, the landmark is a victim of erosion.
