Trains were important in the development of the Coromandel, and today visitors have a choice of nostalgic train excursions.
A 30-minute trip on the Goldfields Railway vintage train travels from Waihi through the scenic Karangahake Gorge to the Waikino Station Cafe.
Near Coromandel town, Driving Creek Railway boasts viaducts, spirals, reverses and tunnels. There's a magnificent view from the ridge-top terminus where a talk is given about local history, ecology and activities.
In Thames, the Small Gauge Railway Society runs trains every Sunday, 11am to 3pm, circumstances permitting, and visitors are welcome.
