The Government will spend $3.21 million bolstering airport security in the wake of last week's attacks in the United States.
Transport Minister Mark Gosche said today that the Aviation Security Service would get the extra funds to boost its screening of domestic air travellers.
The money would pay for more X-ray machines and cover the costs of the screening until mid-December.
"Between now and then the temporary domestic screening provisions would be reviewed and consideration would be given to permanent arrangements," he said in a statement.
Defence staff have been helping the Aviation Security Service with the screening since the weekend.
Domestic passengers are being screened at seven airports - Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown.
Rotorua airport is preparing for screening.
"While it is a slight inconvenience people understand that it is very necessary and many find it reassuring," Mr Gosche said.
In other security measures, New Zealand missions in the Middle East are advising the 4,000 Kiwis in the region to take extra care and New Zealand embassies in Iran and Saudi Arabia are reviewing their evacuation plans as a precaution.
