In the centre of Laos is a utopia nestled into the banks of the magical Mekong River.
Over the centuries, Luang Prabang has been created with one purpose in mind - to soothe the soul of the weary traveller.
Tall coconut palms are set against a rich blue sky. The 66 golden roofs of the Buddhist temples glitter in the sun. French provincial architecture is lovingly restored into quality guesthouses, cafes and craft shops.
Strangers greet us with warm "hellos" ("sabaidee"), the young Buddhist monks colour the streets in their orange robes and the aroma of fresh coffee fills the air.
In the evenings the main street becomes the night market where the H'mong, Mien and Thai tribal people sell their colourful silk, opium pipes and crafts.
The city, population 20,000, has Unesco world heritage status, which means Luang Prabang is being carefully restored and preserved.
The mood is relaxed and peaceful. Singing children walk from school holding hands, and adults tend their riverbank vegetable gardens.
Accommodation is inexpensive, with a spotless guesthouse for $10 and luxury for under $100.
Meals average $5 to $10 for two.
You can hire pushbikes ($2), visit the King's Palace, travel by boat up the Mekong, watch local people weave silk, shop at the markets, enjoy a soothing massage ($5), watch the ethnic ballet ... and fall in love with Luang Prabang.

Things to see and do
The ancient royal city of Luang Prabang is surrounded by mountains at the junction of the Mekong and its tributary, the Khan. In the centre of the city is Mt Phousi with stunning views of the surrounding temples and hills. Luang Prabang is a city where time seems to stand still - new building must be in keeping with its magical atmosphere.
