Beautiful canals, rich architecture, cobbled streets, Belgium beer, waffles ... and, of course, chocolate. What more could you ask for in a holiday destination?
Bruges - the Venice of the North - is a stunning medieval city and historical trade port in Belgium, the country wrongfully accused of being the most boring in Europe.
Bruges is a quaint city that I often daydream of returning to, having spent a few day trips there from London, it being only around one hour's drive from Calais.
What would I do if I got to return? Well, I would start the morning in a cafe looking out to Burg Square with a warm Belgium waffle.
Then a walk slowly around the cobbled streets, wandering in and out of the pretty lace, tapestry and chocolate shops.
I would go for a ride on a boat around the beautiful canals and waterways, while photographing the historical buildings that almost fall into the water.
After a hearty lunch of Flemish stew, frits (fries), mussels and a few glasses of the finest Belgium beer, I would finish off with a number of divine chocolates of different flavours.
To walk off lunch I would take an interesting and informative brewery tour, walking up a thirst for more of the amber nectar.
After visiting the ancient Belfry and other historical churches, I would finish the day with a relaxing horse-and-cart ride around the city and back to my hotel.
When are you going?
