Lighthouses have been travellers' friends for centuries, casting out friendly beacons of reassurance over the dark, dangerous ocean.
While their function is largely practical, many have been inspired by the romance of these isolated outposts, and an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum encompasses the practical and emotional history of New Zealand lighthouses.
In Night Sentinels, Lighthouses of New Zealand, stories, pictures, exhibits and film describe the lives of those who manned the lighthouses until 1990 when the network became fully automated. Entrance Gallery; 9am to 5pm daily.
