5.00 pm - From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
"There has been a serious outbreak of civil unrest in the capital, Port Moresby. Rioting and looting broke out in several parts of the city earlier today and the authorities are attempting to bring the situation under control.
"At this point, it is not known how long it may take the authorities to restore law and order. New Zealanders in Port Moresby have been advised to remain indoors and well away from trouble spots.
"New Zealanders intending to travel to Papua New Guinea are advised to defer all non-essential travel until the situation is brought under control and law and order is restored."
