When it came to marking the arrival of a new century, Britain's cities gave themselves some major millennium projects to complete and some are still in the making.
Leicester, north-west of London, recently opened its completed project - a dramatic building which resembles a soap bubble and has become a landmark for miles around. Inside the $177.6 million complex is the National Space Centre.
Its focal point is a 42m Rocket Tower, housing two giant rockets - one dating back to the 1960s. The other launched the early satellites.
There are numerous hands-on exhibits, a viewing platform and a state-of-the-art domed Space Theatre that gives a 20-minute show, filled with special effects.
Leicester is just over an hour from London by train and road, making it an easy day-trip.
Admission is $25.60 for adults and $18.70 for children.
