A number of tour operators take groups to the famous gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay, using the traditional beach approach, or access the site over neighbouring farmland.
It is possible to get within a few metres of these large birds, which can have a 2m wing span and weigh up to 2kg.
The best time to visit is between November and February, as the chicks start hatching in early November.
