Autumn is a stunning time to enjoy a picnic at Taitua Arboretum, off SH23 at Whatawhata, near Hamilton. The arboretum features a collection of mature trees spread over 20ha of open pasture, lakes and woodland gardens, all linked by a network of walking tracks and bridges. Admission is free and this month, free guided tours are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Bookings are essential. Open daily from 8am to half an hour before dusk.
