Wellington is "arguably one of the 'greenest' capital cities in the world", says its city council.
Walking, jogging and even mountain-biking tracks are all close to the city, giving peaceful respite from the frenetic city pace and a chance to see some beautiful scenery.
Created more than 160 years ago, Wellington's 425ha town belt forms a green crescent around the central city and also offers mountain bikers some thrilling tracks.
Native wildlife - even kiwi - are fast learning the former Karori reservoir is a safe haven. Just minutes from the central city, the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is a joint project between the city council and the sanctuary's trust.
Other green havens within the city include the Botanic Garden, Otari Wilton's Bush and Bolton Street Memorial Park.
