I'm a sucker for the classic Kiwi stuff. If you bumped into me I'd most likely be playing beach cricket, swimming, having a BBQ at the bach with the family, fishing with my bro Finn or playing acoustic guitar around the fire.
If we could teleport you to one place in New Zealand for a week-long holiday, where would it be?
I would love to spend a week up on the mountains in Queenstown. I've never been skiing or snowboarding before and I'd love to learn.
How about for a dream holiday internationally?
I'm hanging out to experience New York. All of my friends who have been, absolutely rave about it. I've grown up watching American movies in the 80s so checking out places like the Ghostbusters fire station would be pretty rad. I'd also love to slip into the music scene and soak up the NY vibe.
What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when travelling?
At a restaurant in Italy a nice Italian waiter laid a giant pizza out in front us and in a Super Mario [Nintendo] voice I blurted out "Aye Luigi! I lika to eatta da pizza!" Only the waiter and my fiancee caught my animated outburst but needless to say I was extremely embarrassed.
Complete this sentence: I can't travel without ...
Comfortable shoes and my iPod.
What's the best travel tip you've ever been given?
Keep a journal.
What was the most memorable meal you've had while travelling?
Not too long ago I took on the famous seafood platter in Meze in the South of France. After enjoying some wine, the most incredible looking structure was placed on our table. It had three magnificent layers of seafood including oysters, a giant crab, huge prawns, mussels, sea snails and topped off with a cray that would make Fat Freddy's [Drop] proud. It took five of us two hours to tackle this monument of ocean goodness and it certainly was a magnificent treat.
What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip?
A fiancee. I proposed to my lovely lady in the fairytale town of Bruges, Belgium. I'm quite thrilled that she said "yes". It could have been an awkward few months travelling around together if it went the other way.
Favourite airport at which to land?
Arriving at the Malaysian airport, Kuala Lumpur, was very exciting. I participated there as a mentor for the first Kuala Lumpur 48-Hour film making festival.
What's the next trip you've got planned?
I'm buzzing over future travel plans for one of the musical groups I'm involved with. Here Come The Zombies are planning a US tour in late 2015. I'm certainly looking forward to kicking around the US with a van load of Kiwi musicians. Bring it on.
Johnny Barker stars in Coverband, starting Thursday, September 25, at 9.45pm, on TV One.
