My Holidays: Brodie Kane

What was your greatest holiday?
Oh boy, I've had some outstanding holidays — but I would have to say my 30th birthday trip to Bali with my friends and family is right up there — Bali is like my spirit island so to have all the people who are so special to me there to enjoy it with me was choice.

And the worst?
I was in the middle of my OE and I left all my friends in Croatia to travel back to a bar job in Santorini. I had €50 to my name, a gum infection and the job I turned up to do didn't work out. I had a good few days in one of the most beautiful places in the world and it was the absolute pits. But I found another job, the dentist fixed my gums and I was happy as Larry.

If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing?
I am the person who quite literally spends the entire day on the beach. If you can't find me baking on the sand, I'm in the water catching waves.

If we could teleport you to one place in NZ for a week-long holiday, where would it be?
At this time of year it would have to be the Bay of Islands — I don't get up that way enough but the weather and the beaches are amazing.

How about for a dream holiday internationally?
I have so many places on my bucket list, but I'll take Mexico followed by a few days in New York, thanks. Then if we've still got the teleporter let's go to South America on our way home ... okay?

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when travelling?
See above in Santorini ... but also, I left my wallet and phone at a little sarong market in Bali once, didn't realise for about an hour ... thought there's no way it will be there when we go back to check, but it was. I've never hugged a stranger with such gusto before.

Aisle seat or window seat?
Either — just not the middle.

Complete this sentence: I can't travel without ... my togs and sunscreen.

What's the best travel tip you've ever been given?
Always take an over-the-shoulder bag as your day bag — it's a lot harder for a scooter-thief to rip if off you that way.

What was the most memorable meal you've had while travelling?
A whole garlic butter fish from the night markets in Kuta with a large Bintang. Total cost? $4.50.

What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip?
The two paintings I bought last year in Bali for about 30 bucks each. And the 170 pairs of authentic Prada glasses ... ha ha ha!

Favourite airport to land at?
Changi in Singapore — they do a damn fine airport.

What's the next trip you've got planned?
I dare say it will be in our winter, I dare say it will be hot and while I'd like to think it might be Mexico, it could also be Bali for the 14th time. Because, I'm a little bit addicted.
