My holiday: Jarod Rawiri

What was your greatest holiday?

When I was 16, I spent four weeks in Sydney with a mate living in Bondi Junction and doing dishes at his sister's restaurant. We got to see most of Sydney and it really is a great city to visit.

And the worst?

Not really a worst, but a near disaster. I was travelling to Hawaii and was in transit at Sydney Airport when our flight to Honolulu was cancelled. Turns out there was an earthquake so all flights were cancelled. I had to spend the night in Sydney waiting to see if we would make it to Hawaii. Thankfully, we were on the plane the next day and I got to go to my mate's restaurant in Bondi too. Turned out to be awesome.

If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing?

Checking out the sights by walking the streets. Usually without a map. I try to blend in.

What's your dream destination?

I have loved travelling the Pacific. I've been to Fiji, New Caledonia and Hawaii and I've heard Rarotonga is amazing. My stepdad is Niuean, so I would love to go there. Samoa and Tonga will are the list as well.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when travelling?

In Noumea, I ordered a pizza that had a raw egg in the middle of it. Another time, while at the departure lounge in Hong Kong, I didn't realise I had to catch a train to get to my boarding gate. I just made the flight.

A photo of my family which means my 3G phone I guess. I tend to buy the latest Empire magazine too ...

What's the best travel tip you've ever been given?

Don't pack your bag too full. Three-quarters full maximum.

What was the most memorable meal you've had while travelling?

Other than pizza with a raw egg? Would have to be rack of ribs from Hurricanes Grill, in Bondi.

What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip?

A silver medal from the World Outrigger Canoe Sprint Champs in Noumea, when I was 16. I had a busy travel schedule that year.

Favourite airport to land at?

Wellington Airport. Plenty of excitement there ...

What's the next trip you've got planned?

I have been back and forth between Wellington and Auckland a bit this year because of work. But who knows where in the world I'll see next. But I'll make sure I've packed light.
