What was your greatest holiday?
A seven-month adventure in 1979 through Peru, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia with my wife Rachel and oldest son Quino, when he was just 2 years old.
And the worst?
Never had a bad one.
If we bump into you on holiday, what are you most likely to be doing?
Working or eating local delicacies.
What's your dream destination?
Chachapoyas in northern Peru.
What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when travelling?
Not tried the local food.
What will you always have in your hand luggage?
Nail clippers and a sense of humour.

What's the best travel tip you've ever been given?
Plod at altitude.
What was the most memorable meal you've had while travelling?
A pachamanca - the Andean equivalent of a hangi - at a high camp in the Cordillera Vilcabamba in Peru.
What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip?
I'm not a souvenir shopper, so I'd have to say memories.
Favourite airport to land at?
Runway 34L at Sydney.
What's the next trip you've got planned?
An 18-day August trip through Peru eating at the best restaurants and markets in every single city, town and village.
