Whisky is cause for a major social get-together in Gore, with a festival held every March to celebrate the Celtic and whisky heritage.
The nearby Hokonui Hills were the base for much of the illicit moonshine whisky industry that flourished from the 1870s to the 1940s.
The Moonshiners Festival, on March 10, is at the Gore A & P Showgrounds, with all-day entertainment, food and other locally made beverages such as beer and wine.
