Matua Valley's vineyard picnic spot

Vineyards are not just for grown-ups wanting to taste wines.

The Matua Valley Winery in Waikoukou Valley Rd, Kumeu, west of Auckland, is also a prime picnic spot. For unplanned picnics, a few of the basics - like French bread and crackers, cheeses and pates - are sold on site.

There's a playground, and the winery lends equipment to those wanting to play petanque.

A gas barbecue area, for use by prior arrangement, completes the options for a day out. There are also cottages offering luxury accommodation.
