KEY POINTS:
It takes a lot to upstage a bride, but that's exactly what our retro-style bicycles did as we gently rode up to the Te Kairanga winery, wicker baskets brimming with a picnic lunch.
Smiles broke across the faces of the bridal party, and onlookers waved as we pedalled by, knowing we resembled something out of the Famous Five.
It had been a while since either of us had jumped on a bike - but as we discovered, getting back in the seat was as easy as ... well, riding a bike. And riding a bike around Martinborough's vineyards on a sunny afternoon was thoroughly pleasant.
We were in the Wairarapa to visit Parehua, a recent addition on Martinborough's outskirts, which hosts executive retreats but also keeps itself welcoming enough to be a luxurious private getaway for couples wanting to escape city life.
Nestled beside a vineyard and just five minutes' ride from the cellar door of world-class wins, such as Ata Rangi, Parehua comprises several lodge-style rooms set around a lake, with established trees dotting the landscape.
Our room, Kanuka Lodge, was set on its own beside a giant tree. The deck overlooked the lake and the outdoor hot tub was well shielded from anyone else's view - perfect for relaxing with a glass of Martinborough's finest product after a day on the bike.
As soon as we arrived we could sense the effort that had gone into making us feel comfortable. The modern accommodation had a window seat with rural views, a luxurious bathroom with a spa bath and a contemporary kitchen. Generally the room had a modern and cosy feel.
A phone call from reception confirmed our bikes were ready and off we went, attracting attention wherever we rode.
After departing with a picnic in our baskets, we returned with several bottles of wine poking out of the top.
We also drew envious comments from fellow bikers not lucky enough to have such ingenious methods of transporting their liquid loot home.
No visit would be complete without checking all of Parehua's facilities, so we picked up our tennis rackets and headed for the all-weather court, fortunately next to the swimming pool.
After a rather one-sided set of tennis (I won't reveal who was on the wrong end of it, but let's just say I have always believed participation is the more important thing), it was straight into the pool to cool off in the sun.
We had time to test the hot tub before setting off on the 15-minute stroll into the centre of Martinborough for dinner. There are several restaurants to choose from in the growing town, and they are often busy. We had a relaxed meal at Est, a friendly restaurant and bar offering a wide range of meals and a good selection of wine.
The dining room was filled with happy chatter as the guests - many of whom seemed to be from out of town - tucked into their meals and reflected on their days.
We wandered back through the quiet night to our accommodation, stars beaming overhead, and the giant comfortable bed ensured a good night's sleep.
With breakfast delivered to our room in the morning and a 3pm check-out, Parehua was a thoroughly relaxing experience.
