Dunedin's Mid Winter Carnival lights up at 6pm on Saturday with a lantern procession to the Octagon.
This free public event celebrates winter in spectacular style, transforming the city centre into a world of giant puppets and lanterns, stilt performers and flag dancers.
There are choreographed performances with soundtrack and lighting effects, and the climax is a fireworks display - although both performers and the audience tend to continue the celebration well into the night.
