Carnival rides, gypsies and traders, entertainers, fire shows, a fireworks display, food and exhibitors are just part of the fun at the 101st Waikato Winter Show. Take a trip back to the medieval era with jousting knights, battles and banquets, and enjoy the excitement of the NZ OffRoad Racing Championship. It runs May 23-25 at the Claudelands Events Centre. Tickets $10 (adults), $5 (children aged 5-14).
Puff and stuff Teams from the community and local schools will be competing to pull a vintage steam train down the main street of Kawakawa on May 25. It's part of the Puff and Pull Carnival, which includes other competitions, a sponsored walk, stalls, a vintage car display and activities based around the theme of steam and coal.
Creative Canterbury Platform 08 showcases the talents of students and staff from the University of Canterbury, offering exhibitions, theatre, literature, lectures, music, film and opera. The festival runs May 21-June 1 at venues in the city and on campus. The programme is online.

More than tango The NZ Street/Latin Dance Festival runs in Hamilton May 29-June 2. Teachers and performers from New Zealand and overseas will provide shows, competitions and workshops covering modern and traditional dance styles. There's also a Charity Ball and nightly dance parties.
