Tranz Rail has given its coastal route from Picton to Christchurch a new name in recognition of the scenic delights of this 100km journey, which, it says, is every bit as spectacular as the trip across the alps to Greymouth.
The rail journey down the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges will now be called the TranzCoastal in keeping with its illustrious sister train, the TranzAlpine.
The TranzCoastal will feature an observation car.
Planned options include day trips to Kaikoura for whale and dolphin-watching.
