Matarangi Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula is vying for its place as one of the area's ideal holiday destinations. Perhaps best known for its 18-hole international golf course, which is now known as The Dunes Golf Resort, Matarangi also offers all-weather tennis courts, a bowling green, a number of challenging mountain bike trails, hiking, kayaking, windsurfing, rock fishing and deep sea diving off the Mercury Islands. For those into more family-oriented pursuits, Matarangi offers a range of activities for the children. The annual Big Dig competition always draws a great number of children keen to find the elusive prizes buried in the sand, while those with a more creative side can display their artistic talents in the hotly contested sandcastle competition.
From the end of December through to the middle of January visitors can enjoy a variety of events and activities as part of the Matarangi Summer Carnival.
There are also numerous golf tournaments at The Dunes Golf Resort designed for players at all levels. Bordering on the picturesque Whangapoua Harbour and the beautiful sandy beaches of the Pacific, The Dunes is set in glorious surroundings, with sea and harbour views from most holes and the Coromandel ranges forming a spectacular backdrop. The Dunes Golf Resort also incorporates Omara's Restaurant and Bar, a popular place to visit.
There are still some sections for sale at Matarangi and also a number of holiday villas available for rent throughout the year by visiting www.matarangi.co.nz. Matarangi lies two and a half hour's drive from Auckland, Hamilton and the Bay of Plenty or a twenty-minute plane trip from Auckland.
