From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
New Zealanders are advised to defer all non-essential travel to Solomon Islands.
Peace talks set to take place in Australia from 10-13 October will examine the key issues of contention. The security situation remains unstable.
In recent weeks there have been incidents of armed holdups and other criminal activity in or around Honiara with the occasional robbery of businesses.
Expatriates have not generally been targeted but have been caught up in some incidents. The Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) largely controls Honiara, although there is an increase of Royal Solomon Islands Police on Honiara street. The Isatabu Freedom Movement (IFM) control large parts of rural Guadalcanal. In some outlying provinces there have been instances of lawlessness and criminal acts.
Parts of Honiara have continued to experience intermittent power and water shortages. Telephone and banking services are operating but their disruption cannot be discounted and could have serious implications for security. Comprehensive insurance cover is no longer available in the Solomon Islands and any intending travellers should ensure they have adequate insurance cover prior to travelling.
New Zealanders currently residing in Solomon Islands should keep themselves informed of the current situation and any changes to the international flight services in and out of the Solomon Islands. With effect from 10 October, Solomon Airlines will be operating a twice weekly service to Brisbane and a once a week service to Fiji, via Vanuatu.
New Zealanders in the Solomon Islands should register with the New Zealand High Commission in Honiara if they have not already done so.
