From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The security situation in Fiji has generally improved.
Law and order has largely been brought under control but on 15 September an explosive device was located and defused outside a hotel in the central business district of Suva.
The situation remains unpredictable. A state of emergency remains in force and further violent incidents and outbreaks of civil unrest remain possible. This situation could be heightened depending on the outcome of the court proceedings against George Speight and his supporters.
In Western Viti Levu including Nadi and all the main tourist destinations, the situation is largely back to normal apart from a few military checkpoints around the Nadi area and the airport.
The situation remains potentially more volatile in Suva where a military curfew remains in effect. The possibility of further explosive devices being planted cannot be ruled out, especially while the trials of George Speight and his group are in process.
New Zealanders are advised to take particular care with holiday and non-essential travel to Suva, and to avoid holiday and non-essential travel to Tailevu, Naitasiri, and the interior of the eastern side of Viti Levu (where the military are still pursuing criminal elements).
New Zealanders visiting Fiji are advised to maintain a sensible degree of caution and personal security awareness. Visitors should monitor the local media for current information.
Travellers are also advised that there has been an outbreak of leptospirosis in Macuata Province of Vanua Levu, which has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 40 people. Visitors to this area should avoid all open waterways and drink only bottled water.
New Zealanders visiting Fiji are advised to register with the High Commission in Suva.
