From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
New Zealanders visiting Fiji should maintain a high degree of caution and personal security awareness.
The situation in Fiji is currently calm. However, a state of emergency remains in force.
Court proceedings against those alleged to be involved in the coup of 19 May, as well as legal challenges to Fiji's interim government, are taking place. Some groups have threatened civil disorder and protest action linked with the Court of Appeal hearing on the status of the 1997 Constitution, which begins on 19 February 2001.
There is also the possibility of further military checkpoints and a curfew being re-imposed around this time.
New Zealanders visiting Fiji are advised to take particular care, especially if visiting the Suva area. Areas where there may be large gatherings or demonstrations should be avoided. Visitors should monitor the local media, and seek information from local authorities where necessary.
Travellers should be aware that it may not be possible to get comprehensive travel insurance for Fiji.
New Zealanders visiting Fiji are advised to register with the High Commission in Suva.
