From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
New Zealanders visiting Fiji should maintain a sensible degree of caution and personal security awareness.
The situation in Fiji is currently calm. However, a state of emergency remains in force. Court proceeding against those involved in the coup of 19 May, as well as legal challenges to Fiji's Interim Government, are taking place. Isolated outbreaks of civil unrest remain possible.
While in Fiji, visitors should monitor the local media and seek information from local authorities where necessary.
Travellers are also advised that there has been a high occurrence of leptospirosis in Fiji this year, which has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people mainly in the province of Macuata Province, Vanua Levu. Visitors to this area should avoid all open waterways and drink only bottled water.
Travellers should be aware that it may not be possible to get comprehensive travel insurance for Fiji.
New Zealanders visiting Fiji are advised to register with the High Commission in Suva.
