KEY POINTS:
Where: Hunua Ranges Regional Park, about 70km southeast of Auckland central.
Getting there: Head south on SH1, exit at Papakura. Turn right into Hunua Rd. For Hunua Falls turn left before Hunua Village.
How long: About an hour from Auckland CBD.
What to do: Hunua Ranges Regional Park is a haven for tramping, mountain biking, fishing and swimming. For an easy, 20-minute walk, park in the Hunua Falls carpark and visit the spectacular water feature.
There are three different mountain-biking trails, all of about 15km and you can fish for trout at Mangatangi and Mangatawhiri Reservoirs, with a permit from the dam. Hungry? Pack a picnic and eat it at a picturesque spot on a trail or use the picnic tables at Hunua Falls.
