KEY POINTS:
The best holiday I've ever had was... I remember a holiday as a young lad at D'Urville Island where I was first introduced to serious sea fishing, boats, weather and big water. At times terrifying and surreal it remains etched as a crystal summer of life's breathtaking potential.
I stayed with an eccentric, German woman, and my vegetarian mother. Irma, the frau was vegan and drove a D9 bulldozer. Depressed by a diet of whole, dry wheatcakes, I retired to the jetty, where I discovered the fisher folk.
I agreed to go fishing with them even though it was a "sin", and have never looked back. Days of sun and clear cold water seen through a glass bottomed box while I hooked fish after fish on an old green handline. Bliss.
The worst was... also with my mother when we met another eccentric woman up the Whangapeka River. She was a pig hunter. Two small boys and two middle-aged women in a shack up the river is a recipe for disaster - especially when mum realised the woman hated men.
And small boys. My brother and I fought, she stormed off and shot up the fence. We left soon after.
With endless time and money I'm off to... Alaska and the Yukon. Fish. Wilderness. Lodges.
The best travel advice I have is... enjoy where you are, when you are. Expectations will always be disappointed, but the unexpected occurs right where you are. Enjoy it.
