James Cook was a mere lieutenant when he discovered White Island in 1769 but it would be nearly six decades before anyone realised it was a volcano.
Its sulphur mining days are over and now the island, 49km off Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty, is a magnet for tourists. Guides Peter and Jenny Tait's story will hopefully promote constructive debate about the island's future.
