Te Houtaewa Festival, in the Far North, starts with the Te Houtaewa Challenge 90-Mile Beach Race on March 5. The race follows the footsteps of legendary Maori athlete Te Houtaewa, and offers several entry categories, from a 60km ultra run to a 6km Walk for Life. Entertainment, stalls and activities will be provided at the finish point. Between March 7 and 11, artists from the Tai Tokerau region will work on and display contemporary and traditional Maori art at the Tuku Wairua Centre in Kaitaia. A Kai festival will feature workshops on traditional Maori food preservation and cooking. March 12-13 the action moves to Shipwreck Bay for the Waka Ama Surf Challenge. Details are on the website.
