The Tauranga Arts Festival, on from October 18-28, incorporates two striking international exhibitions. Earth from Above is the huge outdoor aerial photographic exhibition by acclaimed photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. It features 110 large-scale photographs taken around the world, from spectacular glaciers to a market garden in Timbuktu. The World Press Photo exhibition begins on October 20 at the new Tauranga Art Gallery, which also opens on that day. Other festival events include music, theatre, dance and other exhibitions.

Celebrating the South
Christchurch has been the launching point for many Antarctic expeditions by explorers, scientists and artists. The city's Antarctic Festival celebrates these connections and explores the history, science and culture with an exciting programme of films, lectures, exhibitions, tours and family events. This year, it focuses on the 50-year anniversary of the establishment of Scott Base and 50 years of co-operation between the NZ and US Antarctic programmes. It runs from September 24-30.

Town full of clowns
The Clown Day at Thames market on September 29 promises fun for the family. A group of clowns will perform "random acts of silliness" down Pollen Street, and locals and stall-holders also get into the spirit with crazy costumes. It runs 8am-12pm.Sparkling NelsonSunny Nelson puts on a feast of theatre, dance, arts and sculpture during the Nelson Arts Festival, October 11-22. Festivities begin with the Port Nelson Masked Parade, when thousands of people interpret the theme "Sparkling Sustainable Future" with a blast of colour, sparkle, masks and sound. The parade starts at 5.30pm and is followed by the Carnivale street party.

Art in a garden
Flaxmere garden near Hawarden in North Canterbury was established 40 years ago, and is recognised as a garden of national significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust. The mountain views make a fine backdrop for Flaxmere's "Art in a Garden" event, when artists and sculptors hold demonstrations and workshops and have works for sale. There'll be entertainment and food and wine will be available. It runs October 25-28, and costs $12 (prepaid); $15 (gate).

Cycle the bay
Kids, parents, friends and family can enjoy an exhilarating bike ride through some of Hawke's Bay's prime farming country during the Tour of the Bay on October 14. There's a 10km fun ride that's suitable for most people, while more serious cyclists can take on the 50km or 110km challenge. It starts at 9am and several age grades are available. Enter online.

Stroll the boulevard
The main street of Ashburton comes alive during Boulevard Day on September 24. As well as over 100 shops and stalls offering plenty of bargains, there's all-day entertainment and food. It runs 9am-4pm.
