Wanakafest runs September 12-16, bringing Wanaka's lakefront alive with more than 50 events, including music, parades, food and wine, fireworks, sports and crazy antics. To celebrate the festival's 20th anniversary, organisers are planning some new treats but favourites like the Street Parade, Tradesman's Crate Stack, Polar Plunge and Passion for Fashion will be back.

Bounty from the sea
The Kaikoura Seafest on Saturday, October 6 celebrates the abundance of the ocean and its importance to the region. A huge central marquee means the weather won't affect the proceedings, which include product displays and demonstrations, live entertainment and lots of good food and wine. Friday's Big Top Bash is a huge party featuring top entertainers. There are also activities on the days surrounding the festival.

Gardening heaven
If it's remotely connected to gardening, you'll find it at the Creative Gardens Expo at Pettigrew Green Arena in Napier, on September 8 and 9. There'll be around 120 indoor and outdoor stalls, an Edible Garden Lane, a hay bale maze and other entertainment for the kids, demonstrations, food and wine marquees, entertainment and more. It costs $6, children under 16 free.

Spring fling
The Remarkables Spring Fling on September 22 and 23 is two days of wild and whacky events celebrating the spring skiing conditions. The carnival weekend is great for families and spectators, and includes offbeat events such as a "Whitewater Raft Race" on snow and the "Splash for Cash" water jump. Live bands will provide the weekend's soundtrack.

Yee-ha Hokianga
The Hokianga Country Music Festival takes place at venues in Opononi, Omapere, Rawene and Kohukohu over the weekend September 21-23. There are courtesy vans to and from venues, plus a special late ferry between Rawene and Kohukohu on Friday and Saturday nights. It's $15 for a ticket that covers the whole weekend.

Discovering history
Auckland's Heritage Week runs September 15-30, and celebrates the city's built, natural and social heritage. Events include guided walks and tours, exhibitions, displays and talks, harbour trips, films, family friendly activities and more. Most will be free but some require a small donation.
