The Eastern Bay of Plenty offers excellent birdwatching, from waders at Ohiwa Harbour to forest birds in Te Urewera National Park. From October 4-14, the Whakatane BirdsaPlenty celebrates this avian diversity with birdwatching tours and walks, and activities such as films, lectures and conservation displays in the community. On October 14 there's a special birding trip out to the unique environment of White Island.

Wine retreat

Fishy business
On Sunday September 30 Fish & Game hold their annual open day at the Ngongotaha Trout Hatchery in Rotorua.
The day gives an interesting insight into how the Rotorua Lakes Fishery is managed, with seminars and workshops, guided tours, and a chance for kids to have a go at fishing.

Flowery fantasy
Enjoy the springtime festivities at the Dunedin Rhododendron Festival, which runs October 25-28. As well as attractive public gardens, many private gardens will open their gates to visitors. There'll also be garden tours and fairs, garden parties, exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops. On October 27, Lanarch Castle is the atmospheric venue for a Masquerade Ball with the theme "Floral Fantasies". Online programme available.

Pedal power
The Martinborough Charity Fun Ride on October 28 is a fundraising cycle ride through the countryside surrounding the wine village. There are 48km or 115km options, and entry is $45 for individuals, $75 for tandem. Spot prizes will be given away, and the entry fee includes a gourmet barbecue. While the cyclists are slogging it out, non-riders can browse through the Martinborough Country Market, which runs every Sunday 10am-2pm. Enter online, no entries accepted on the day.

It's showtime
The Hawke's Bay A & P Show runs October 17-19, and as well as watching competitions such as fencing, shearing and dog trials, visitors can browse trade sites, see the carnival or sit back with a glass of local wine and a band. Animal World allows kids to interact with a range of friendly animals. Entry costs $25 (family), $12 (adult), $6 (child & senior). Showgrounds, Kenilworth Road, Hastings, 8am-5pm daily.
