KEY POINTS:
Do you travel light or heavy?
If I had my way, light. I like the thought of only taking carry-on
luggage. But now I have kids, it's usually mayhem.
Cattle or first-class?
Depends on how long the flight is.
I can't travel without ...
My family.
What type of suitcase do you carry?
Big, solid and robust. We have a couple of Samsonites.
What's always in your hand luggage?
Lip balm, Frequent Flyer nasal spray, my notebook (flying is a
good time to think about stuff) and passport wallet.
Are you a planner or last-minute packer?
Definitely last minute. Three hours prior to travel time is always pretty stressful.
What's the best thing you've brought back from a trip?
A really cool piece of political art by a guy in Vietnam called Dan Tan. He was about 70 years old and almost blind. His wife ended up selling his art for him and describing to him which pieces people chose -
my heart just ached for him.
Favourite or most exciting airport to land in?
When my girlfriend was getting her pilot's licence. We were supposed to fly on to a grass runway, but it ended up being something more like runway, tussock, runway, tussock.
Best travel tip?
Always, always get really good advice and recommendations from
people who are into the same sort of stuff as you. Going cold to a country sucks because you really feel like a tourist and could
experience so much more.
Most memorable trip?
I think it would have to be where we stayed on a remote island (Phu Quoc, Vietnam) in really basic accommodation.
The food, experience and surroundings were pretty unbelievable and really untouched.
We travelled around everywhere on a motorbike and ate amazing food from
markets for next to nothing. The people were incredible.
What do you do while on the plane?
Usually get some food down the boys, negotiate with them on why
scrap-books, window watching and reading is so much more fun than
ripping it up down the plane aisles. Oh, how self-indulgent I used to be.
