KEY POINTS:
Jenolan Caves in the New South Wales Blue Mountains has reopened its Nettle Cave after 74 years with a new digital audio tour that allows visitors to explore the cave by themselves.
The tour has only been available since December 18 and will offer a chance to see rare prehistoric life-forms called stromatolites. This is the first cave opening at Jenolan since the Ribbon Cave in 1931.
Together with the adjoining Devil's Coach House, the Nettle Cave has been incorporated into a trail that can be followed using a digital handset developed by Acoustiguide.
This allows visitors to hear explanations of geological features and historical aspects in as much detail as they choose, while exploring at their own pace.
The new self-guided tour will be included in a new Jenolan Pass, which provides admission to another cave tour, a souvenir guide and a half-price offer on further cave tours valid for 12 months.
Prices start from A$22 adults, A$15 children/concession, A$57 family (two adults/three children). For details: visit www.jenolancaves.org.au
