The Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei is set amid regenerating bush. Several artists live and work on site and there's a co-op shop and a cafe, open to the public every day. On first Sunday of every month it hosts The Quarry Do, a market with art and crafts, food and entertainment.

Land of giants
Take the chance to see Northland's ancient kauri trees on the Waipoua Forest Fun Run and Walk on May 24. Participants will be shuttled by bus to the starting point at the Tane Mahuta carpark, before launching into a 12km course. Entry forms online.

The Paihia Matariki Festival includes an exhibition of Northland art. The workshop programme features Maori indoor games, weaving kete and how to make kites and lanterns. Runs from May 29 to June 1 at the Copthorne Hotel, Waitangi.

Winter temptations
Wineries and boutique food suppliers from the lower North Island will showcase their wares at the Manawatu Wine & Food Festival on June 6 and 7. The venue is the Awapuni Function Centre, where local performers will provide music all weekend. Entry is $10 an adult, 14 and under free. Group discounts available.
