The Riviera. Hmph.
Designer people, glitzy casinos and artificial beaches ... and not my scene at all.
Or so I thought until I read this book.
Carolyn McKenzie is a New Zealander who for the past few years has lived in the ancient town of Ventimiglia Alta in the Italian Riviera.
In that time she has come to know the real Riviera with its rich history, intriguing culture, idiosyncratic people, beautiful scenery and glorious food which has nothing to do with film festivals, jet-setters or perfectly tanned bodies.
This book is a delightful mix of her experience buying and renovating an apartment in Ventimiglia, getting to know her new home town and making forays out to some of the region's most fascinating places.
So we tramp in the extraordinary Valley of Wonders in the Mercantour National Park, enjoy the Citrus Fruit Festival in Menton, share in the tragic tale of the witches of Triora and take the remarkable train journey through the Roya Valley.
Along the way we share insightful anecdotes, meet remarkable people, recall snapshots of history, collect useful travel tips and even enjoy some mouthwatering local recipes.
It's the sort of book to take with you to Europe, read while you're on your way to the Riviera, follow its tips while you're there and savour the recipes and memories when you return home.
