Between May and September is said to be the best time to take the 19-day Trans-Mongolian Discovery tour from China to Russia aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway.
For $5180 a person, sightseeing begins in Beijing before boarding the express train which takes travellers beyond the Great Wall across the fringes of the Gobi Desert to the grasslands of Mongolia, on to Lake Baikal, and then to Russia's best-known cities of Moscow and St Petersburg.
