Earthwatch Expeditions scientific research projects allow conservation-minded travellers to see remote parts of the world, endangered wildlife and historic sites.
The American organisation says it operates on the notion that involving people in the process of science gives them an understanding and gives the world a future.
Earthwatch projects could hardly be called holidays. They range from studies aimed at improving the future for endangered animals - river dolphins in Peru, sea turtles in Turkey or snow leopards in Asia - to projects on rainforests, historic excavations and ancient rock art.
Projects, from a weekend to a month and in 55 different countries, cost between about $1200 and $7000 not including airfares. Team members arrange their own travel to and from a project.
