Holiday Hits for the family

Laura McGoldrick and Toni Street give their tips for the best family travel destinations.

LAURA:

I completely understand the notion of travelling with a child under 2 is harrowing. I'd argue that actually it's the best time. Especially if you pick a family-friendly destination like Fiji.

My husband, Martin, and I took our daughter Harley to Nadi when she was 8 months old and it was awesome. We stayed at the Westin in Denarau — although all hotels in Denarau are family-friendly. It's easy to walk between them all and try new restaurants, there are always friendly people, and the same equally tired parents chasing some sunshine. We loved it. It's only a three-hour flight (and if your child doesn't do too well flying — it's only three hours), there's no time difference — I could not recommend it more.

There are activities for kids and parents separately, and kids and parents together.

Talking about it makes me want to go back. Be brave mums and dads — it's good for us to get away. And once you get there you will be so glad you did.

TONI:

Noosa is my ideal easy destination for kids. We went there when I was quite sick following treatment from an auto-immune disease I have and it was the best decision as it was stress-free and so relaxing for everyone. I love Noosa as it has that slow beachy vibe, but there's still so much to do that it's never boring. We took the kids to Australia Zoo, which is a short drive away, and The Ginger Factory was a highlight too (it has an awesome boat ride). The shopping is excellent, the food options are numerous and delicious, and the streets are lined with fairy lights which gives quite a magical feel at night. We also hit the jackpot with our accommodation at the RACV.

It has big two- and three-bedroom apartments with full kitchen facilities, tennis court, huge pool, spa, plus a heated kids pool with slides and water features. It had everything a family could ask for and is heavily discounted if you're an AA member. The Noosa beach itself is hard to beat, and strolling along the waterfront was a daily activity. We also loved dining at the Surf Club for a fun, relaxed option. We have been back three times since our first trip, and will go again because of the value for money.
