If you're heading away for Christmas holidays, check this quick list of reminders before you go.
SECURITY:
Protect your house from burglars by following these police tips:
* Alarm system
* Neighbourhood Support Group sticker on window
* Clothes on the washing line (just a few)
* Old boots or shoes by the door.
* Have a friend or neighbour park in the driveway.
* Arrange to keep the lawns trimmed.
* Lock all windows, doors, sheds and garages.
* Don't close blinds and curtains.
* Don't leave a key hidden outside.
You should also:
* Let your neighbours know you are going away and leave a contact number with them.
* Be a good neighbour yourself. If you see any suspicious activity at or near a home you know is empty, report it to the police.
MAIL AND PAPERS:
Have a friend or neighbour collect your mail and newspaper. You may wish to suspend your Herald delivery while you are away.
NZ Post will deliver mail as normal except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and January 2.
PETS:
If you can't take your pets with you, make sure they are fed and cared for. A cat can be fed by a neighbour but a dog needs more attention.
Plan ahead. Every year at this time hundreds of unwanted pets end up at the Auckland SPCA, either dumped or handed over the holiday season begins.
YOUNG CHILDREN:
Plan your travelling time around sleep and rest times. Keep favourites soft toys handy in the car and break long trips with rests for fresh air, snacks and toilet stops.
