For a history lesson with a view, take a trip to North Head Historic Reserve.
North Head was an important lookout and defence site for Maori, and in the 1880s military fortifications were built to protect Auckland from possible Russian invaders.
Military development continued during World War I and World War II, and tunnels, gun and searchlight emplacements and other defence structures still exist today.
From Devonport, follow King Edward Parade and watch for signs to North Head.
