Imagine carrying 30 to 70kg over the mountainside paths of Nepal, day after day in all weathers, with only a piece of plastic to shelter you from the rain. This is the life of many trekking porters in Nepal.
The International Porter Protection Group was formed in 1997, after the death of a young Nepali porter on the Annapurna Circuit, to improve the working conditions of porters.
On October 3, Peter Hillary, Graeme Dingle and Liz Harding will present a slide show about their adventures, at Kings School, Remuera Rd, from 7 to 9 pm, to raise money for the group. Entry: $10 donation. Contact: ph (09) 373 3531.
