Whangarei Museum & Heritage Park is a 25ha park with picnic areas, bush walks, a kiwi house, the historic Clarke homestead (1886), and the Native Bird Recovery Centre. The Heritage Park holds themed "Live Days", at which visitors can picnic in the attractive grounds and enjoy special stalls, entertainment and attractions. The next Live Day is Easter on the Park on Sunday, followed by Military Manoeuvres on April 30. Both run 10am-4pm and cost $8 for adults. Kids are free. It's on SH14 at Maunu.
