Hukutaia Domain in Opotiki is a tranquil place to visit for a picnic or stroll. The 5ha domain was established in the 1930s and contains a variety of plants, some native to the area and others that have been introduced from offshore islands.
The domain is home to the historic tree "Taketakerau", which was a reliquary for the bones of important people from a local sub-tribe. The tree, which is estimated to be around 2000 years old, has a girth of 22m and is 23m high.
Hukutaia Domain is at the end of Woodlands Rd. Parking, seating and toilets are on site.
